HURRICANE, west virginia

Pronounced (HURR-i-KINN), not (HURR-i-CANE), this Putnam County West Virginia town was named for a group of trees bent in one direction (appearing to have been struck by a hurricane) observed by a team of surveyors commissioned by George Washington. In 1863, Union and Confederate forces clashed at Hurricane Bridge. When the railroad track was laid through town, Hurricane became a trading post for tobacco and other agricultural goods. Today, Hurricane fosters a growing local art community in its charming main street district.
