About two hours equidistant from Pittsburgh, PA and Charleston, WV lies Bridgeport, West Virginia. The area was settled by frontiersman John Simpson in 1764 when he discovered Simpson Creek. As this area was prone to attack by Native Americans, white settlers built two forts in the region, and it was originally named “Bridge Fort” for these holdfasts. A cartography mistake led to the town being named “Bridgeport.” Today Bridgeport remains a small community rich in history and tradition, conveniently close to the state capitol and metropolitan areas, but far enough away for visitors to enjoy the quiet outdoors.
