Chief Menominee was a tribal leader for the Potawatomi Tribe who had a village on reservation lands in Marshall County, Indiana, about five miles southwest of Plymouth. He refused to participate in further land cession negotiations, and subsequently, he and his tribe were forced off their lands. This memorial is dedicated to Chief Menominee and the 859 Potawatomi who were forced off the lands and marched in the Potawatomi Trail of Death to Osawatomi, Kansas, nearly 660 miles away.
