Rumored to have been named for the Native American term for “knee-deep in mud,” Wakarusa began as Olive Township in Elkhart County. As the township grew, it became a convenient waystation to help locals from having to travel to Goshen or Elkhart for business.

At the end of the 19th century, the Wabash Railroad ran through Wakarusa connecting Chicago with Montpelier, Ohio, which became part of the Norfolk & Western Railway. Today, two cars from the trains which actually ran on this railway are on display at the Wakarusa History Museum.
